Bespoke column casings specified to complete WW2 memorial building

  • 12 May 2015

The National Memorial to ‘The Few’ is dedicated to those who fought in the skies to protect Britain from invasion during the Second World War.

The site, which is maintained by the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, sits on the white cliffs between Dover and Folkestone.

It has recently been extended to include ‘The Wing’, a tourist building, which has been built to accommodate the centre’s new hands-on Scramble Experience.

Designed by Godden Allen Lawn, the pitch of the building’s roof mirrors the angle of a Spitfire’s wing to honour Churchill’s ‘Few’.

Combating design challenges

Contour Casings made a significant contribution to the project; the manufacturer was requested to solve a number of difficult design issues with its column casing products.

The company designed and manufactured 25 column casings – 17 internal, each in 2 colours and reinforced with 8 external column casings – to tackle the challenges.

Circular column casings were also created to cover the building’s structural beams.

Many of the internal column casings were developed with sloping tops at a 5 degree angles to ensure collaboration with the pitch of the roof.

The external casings were coated with a Syntha Pulvin Powder to protect their metal structures from the sea air.

All of the casings were created in-house; Contour made good use of its 32,000 square foot facility, combining its technical expertise with its CAD facilities.
