Vinyl flooring installed throughout new health care facility

Many of the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’s outpatient departments have been relocated to Acre Mill, a former wire mill building that has recently been renovated.

This has been done to allow the Infirmary to expand its inpatient and A&E departments.

The redevelopment of Acre Mill was undertaken by Sheffield-based firm Jefferson Sheard Architects, which was tasked with conserving the Grade II Listed establishment as well as transforming it into a sanitary health care environment.

The project’s flooring contractors, CMC Flooring, specified over 3,300 square metres of Polyflor’s sheet vinyl flooring ranges.

The flooring was selected to suit the demands and requirements of each different interior environment.

Creating a calming atmosphere

For the new facility’s corridors, waiting rooms and reception areas, Polyflor’s Forest FX PUR wood effect sheet vinyl was installed in two contrasting shades.

Classic Oak 3100 and Classic Walnut 3230 were selected to create a welcoming and calming atmosphere for the Infirmary’s staff as well as its patients.

The shades were combined using waterjet cutting technology to create a ramp warning sign in circulation areas.

With design in mind, Acre Mill’s treatment rooms were fitted with Polyflor’s Pearlazzo PUR flooring in Sailcloth 9710 with contrasting boarders in the shade Ocean Ripple 9720.

Both Polyflor’s Forest FX range and its Pearlazzo PUR flooring has been designed to cope with high traffic, making it suitable for installation in healthcare facilities and commercial environments.

The floorings are also reinforced with PUR, a polyurethane reinforcement layer which has been designed to allow for ease of maintenance.

Safety flooring

To provide slip resistance in the facility’s washrooms, Polyflor’s safety flooring, Polysafe Verona PUR, was installed in the shade Dolphin Grey 5203.

The changing rooms and shower areas also benefited from the installation of safety flooring with Polysafe Hydro Evolve being specified in the colour Tigris 4257.

The built-in safety particles and pimple emboss of Polyflor’s Polysafe Hydro Evolve range have been included within the design to provide barefoot and shod slip resistance in areas that are prone to wetness.

Finally, a vinyl flooring from Polyflor’s ESD series was fitted in Acre Mill’s X-ray suite.

The Finesse SD flooring has been developed with static dissipative properties to allow for electrostatic discharge protection in areas where static control is necessary.

Both CMC Flooring and the architects at Jefferson Sheard were impressed by the combination of performance and aesthetic appeal offered by Polyflor’s vinyl flooring ranges.

With a vast selection of flooring designs available from Polyflor, the designers were able to create a professional look and avoid the creation of a clinical feel.

As Polyflor’s flooring can be recycled via the Recofloor ‘take back’ scheme, CMC Flooring was able to recycle a large proportion of the waste it generated whilst working on the project.
