CPR requirements have been set to improve the safety of steel-framed buildings. Thus, manufacturers and contractors who fail to CE mark their work are at risk of being banned from working in the UK and Europe.
In addition to this, they face prosecution.
To apply the CE mark, compliance to Part 1 (Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures) and Part 2 (Technical requirements for steel structures) of BS EN 1090 must be proved.
Part 2 of BS EN 1090 sets out 4 Execution Classes (EXCs). For EXC2, 3 and 4, which deal with residential or commercial structures, bridges and specialist structures, all welding must be controlled by a Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC).
Manufacturers must be able to provide a certificate that shows their RWC is trained to EN 14731 and EN ISO 3834.
Contractors and manufacturers must also supply a Declaration of Performance (DoP) for the steel frame or structural component.
Additionally, they must possess a Factory Production Control (FPC) Certificate. These can be distributed by Notified Bodies such as BM TRADA.
BM TRADA can offer guidance through the CE marking process in order to ensure its clients meet the requirements of CPR. By offering this help, the company hope to aid its clients in applying a CE mark to their structural steel components.
