Automatic window actuators for school’s smoke ventilation

  • 13 Nov 2014

Window actuators from SE Controls were specified for use at the Holy Rosary School in Johannesburg

In the event of a fire, SE Controls’ SECO stroke chain actuators, which are fire tested to EN12101-2: Annex G Standard, are activated to provide appropriate ventilation that ensures fire escape routes remain smoke free.

The actuators were commissioned alongside four manual control point (MCP) fireman’s override switches as well as OS2 Type 23 control panels to provide overall control of the system whilst linking everything to the fire safety system already present at the school.

The building, named Bishop Shannon Hall, was designed by Dual Design Architects, with construction carried out by JTSON construction. Designed to expand the existing school facilities and allow them to hold functions for larger audiences, the hall can stage sports, dances, indoor entertainment and formal ceremonies.

Whilst the design was drawn up with a higher standard of event staging in mind, the safety of the visitors, students, performers and competitors was paramount, with fire a particularly important consideration. The rationale behind the fire system design, which covers the smoke ventilation system that was eventually specified and installed, was completed by Building Code Consultants.
