By supplying its paving products to Richmond Borough Council, Charcon has contributed to a multi-million pound investment programme to transform Twickenham’s town centre for the Rugby World Cup.
Twickenham town is synonymous with English Rugby Union. Its 82,000 seater stadium will play host to ten games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, including the final. However, rugby is not its only draw for visitors; the town boasts the second largest shopping area in the London Borough of Richmond.
With huge crowds expected to be heading to Twickenham throughout September and October, the plans to regenerate the town centre were introduced to make it more attractive and pedestrian-friendly.
Having previously made use of Charcon’s Willow Buff UK Natural Yorkstone paving, Richmond Borough Council specified the company’s product for use in Twickenham.
Offering a blend of buffs and greys, the Yorkstone was used to repave areas of York Street, King Street and London Road, widening footways by up to 1.5 metres to reduce the dominance of traffic. In total, 8,500 square metres of the paving product was installed to create an attractive townscape.
Charcon, which is a commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, also supplied a further 888 square metres of Granite paving to replace the existing paving in Church Street, as well as a Granite sett road surface.
With Charcon delivering on time and within budget, completion of the Twickenham town centre product is expected in June 2016.
