Wienerberger clay pavers have been specified as a key material in the creation of a new urban environment, as part of a £250 million investment in Telford town centre.
The first phase of Telford’s Southwater One development has been completed with the unveiling of the gold-clad Telford & Wrekin Council building. The project – situated on green belt, waterside land – represented a major overhaul to the areas aesthetics/
Carried out by developers Morgan Sindall, careful selection of building materials was of utmost importance to the design and Wienerberger was chosen to provide the clay pavers.
With a physical and symbolic contrast between the bold, modernist external appearance of the development and its natural surroundings, there was a clear requirement for the paving to provide a link between the two.
The Sienna (Hague Cream) pavers addressed this; featuring warm and sandy tones which blended in with the surrounding landscape. The additional use of Wienerberger’s Mastiek and Auraton pavers created a crips waterfront patina with their clean grey finishes.
Once completed, the Southwater One development is intended to create an exciting commercial space, whilst providing a sense of tranquility and solidity.
This has been achieved with the use of clay paving. Its natural durability has addressed the issue of heavy traffic, whilst the laying pattern and colouration contribute to creating a relaxing atmosphere.
With both the rigid Stretcher pattern and the more sporadic Herringbone technique being employed, the retail scape is afforded both consistency and variety.
The project’s architectural ambition is to provide a high functioning retail landscape from which Telford can develop its business, retail, commerce and public facilities.
Keith Barker, Commercial Director at Wienerberger, commented on the project: “This was a scheme with a great deal of considerations, from material performance and local environment, right down to the smallest design spec – but it’s that sort of attention to detail that defined this project, and made it something that we were so very keen to contribute to.”
