Ventilation rainscreen cladding specified for glass façade installation

A former computer centre based in Munich has benefited from the installation of a new glass façade and an impact-resistant ventilation rainscreen cladding system from Lithodecor

Berlin-based architect, Sauerbruch Hutton, recently won an architecture competition to redevelop a former computer centre located in Berliner Strasse, Munich.

The 1980s building, which was acquired by Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft AG prior to the redevelopment, has been transformed with a new glass façade design.

To install the new glass façade, the architect requested the removal of the building’s original parapets and the front edges of the intermediate floors. The existing external façade had to be stripped back entirely.

By using offset vertical pilaster strips, the architect has achieved a striking façade; the colour scheme of the building now changes depending on the angle it is being observed from. This dynamic is enhanced by the upward projection of the building.

Lithodecor’s Airtec Glass ventilation rainscreen cladding system was specified to enhance the façade.

Consisting of toughened safety glass, which is bonded to a concrete carrier, the Airtec Glass ventilation rainscreen cladding system has been designed as an impact-resistant composite panel.

With panels up to 4.7 square metres in size and a range of design options – transparent, tinted, enamelled, plain, or screen painted – the system can be adapted to suit a wide range of projects.

By using concealed clips, the panels can be attached to aluminium substructures, both horizontally and vertically. Ceramic discs, which have been designed to transmit the load from the panel to the clips, are attached to the base for additional support.

Lithodecor rainscreen cladding systems are produced by alsecco, along with a wide range of additional products and services.
