The University of Greenwich’s new School of Architecture and Construction has created a living laboratory by making use of Alumasc’s sustainable Blackdown green roofs
Based within Maritime Greenwich on the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the university’s new development features a number of terraced roofs, which are interlinked by teaching gardens.
In addition to holding the title of London’s largest multifunctional roof space, it has also received a BREEAM Innovation award for its educational and research aims.
Alumasc supplied over 3,000 square metres of green roofing system to facilitate the building’s design; the system was installed by Blackdown.
Alumasc’s Blackdown green roofs are constructed from a series of components that replicate a natural growing environment for plants. The university’s roof space can, therefore, be used as a living laboratory to test the sustainability of new landscaping and architectural ideas.
In addition to this, green roofs can absorb CO2, improve a building’s thermal performance and increase rainwater retention. They also work to reduce the life-cycle costs of a roof by protecting it from climatic changes, UV light and mechanical damage.
