Radon removal specialist, Properteco, has advised property owners to consider the health risks associated with harmful gases.
Although uranium occurs naturally in soils and rocks, its radioactive decay can form a colourless, odourless gas called radon; this substance can be detrimental to human health.
The gas can be found both indoors and outdoors. Its radioactive elements can be inhaled, which may cause damage to the lungs.
According to Public Health England, exposure to radon can increase the risk of developing lung cancer; research by Cancer Research UK and the European Commission supports this notion.
It is, therefore, important that homes, work places and schools are tested for harmful gases. Residents should endeavour to find out whether they live in a radon risk area; specialist companies, such as Properteco, can assess the amount of radon in a property and remove it for a small cost.
Useful resources, such as an interactive map, have been developed to help homeowners assess the amount of radon in their area.
