Roofing membrane systems specified for new student accommodation block

  • 15 Feb 2016

Sika Trocal’s Type S roofing membrane and Type SGmA single ply membrane systems have been installed to provide a watertight finish for an accommodation block’s green roof and terraced areas.

Built to accommodate a number of en-suite study bedrooms and a series of self-contained studio apartments, Murano House offers student housing in Edinburgh city centre. The four storey block was designed by Ziggurat Student Living; the construction process was carried out by Ogilvie.

Comprising over 250 bedrooms, the building also features sociable areas, as well as a green roof and a number of city-view terraces.

To provide an attractive finish for the new roof areas, two roofing systems – Sika-Trocal S and SGmA – were specified for installation.

Sika-Trocal S roofing membrane

As the project’s appointed roofing contractor, MBM Group undertook the installation: the company fitted 1,200 square metres of Sika Trocal’s Type S roofing membrane across 80% of the total roof area.

Providing waterproofing and durability, Sika-Trocal Type S is suitable for mechanically fastened roofs in both new build and refurbishment applications. MBM was able to secure the membrane and the insulation with a single fixing.

SGmA single ply membrane

To complete the application, MBM fitted 300 square metres of Type SGmA single ply membrane, which was loose laid across a series of roof terraces.

The system was overlaid with ballast to ensure that the completed roof could be used as a trafficked area.
