CMS Window Systems has been awarded a building envelope contract for the University of Brighton’s new £14m Advanced Engineering Centre (AEC).
Designed by HASSELL, the AEC building will provide new facilities including laboratories, tutorial rooms, meeting rooms and exhibitions spaces. The building will offer capacity for 300 students, in addition to 35 academic staff and 35 research posts.
The AEC will be based on the University of Brighton’s Moulsecoomb campus. It will support the expansion of the partnership between the university and specialist manufacturer Ricardo, which aims to advance the design and development of novel low-carbon internal combustion systems.
CMS has been contracted to deliver thermally broken aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling using Metal Technology systems to minimise energy use.
The company will fabricate and install more than 380m2 of curtain walling for the three storey building. It will also supply windows (with a typical U-value of 1.3 W/m2K) and doors created using Metal Technology’s System 5-20D Hi+.
The Advanced Engineering Centre has been described by Councillor Julie Cattell, chair of Brighton & Council’s planning committed, as “an exciting, state of the art, new development which will deliver advances in research and technology in automotive engineering and bring benefits for the local economy.”
The building’s development has been funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the University of Brighton, with a further £7m contribution from the Government’s Local Growth Fund.
