Natural ventilation lectures at the University of Nottingham

University lectures address the role of natural ventilation

  • 7 Apr 2016

Gilberts’ Technical Director, Roy Jones, has delivered a number of lectures reviewing the role of natural ventilation in the built environment to students at the University of Nottingham.

As part of its BEng and MEng degrees in Architectural Environment Engineering, the University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Engineering has held a series of interactive lectures, presented by Roy Jones.

The importance of natural ventilation

Despite his impressive qualifications and experience within the air distribution industry, Roy’s message was simple: ‘Buildings are occupied by people, and people need to breathe!’

Supplemented by video learning, his lectures offered a review of smoke and air movement tests, which are frequently carried out at Gilberts’ in-house test laboratory.

Designed to help students to understand how theory can put into practice using simple tools or technology – such as physical testing or computational software –  the lectures outlined the difference between a functioning building, and one with inadequate ventilation.

Roy aimed to equip the students with the knowledge necessary for their work environments and the future: as buildings become more airtight, and as energy efficiency increases in importance, good ventilation is the key to a building’s success.
