The Kingspan TEK Building System has been used in the construction of a new build in Lewes, which was recently featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs.
The building appeals to the contemporary taste of its owners, whilst complementing the industrial heritage of its site, which was formerly used as a loading bay for chalk, mined at a nearby quarry.
To bring Sandy Rendel’s ambitious design to life, several practical issues had to be tackled. The home’s plot is bordered by the River Ouse and the main road into Lewes, limiting its width to 11 metres.
The Kingspan TEK Building System was specified to ensure that the building’s original design could be fulfilled. Comprising structural insulation panels (SIPs), the Building System can be pre-cut to suit a project’s specific requirements, making it ideal for use on such a narrow plot.
The construction team made use of the Building System in small modules; as a manoeuvrable alternative to pre-assembled elevations, the system enabled those working on the project to complete it on time and within budget.
Manufactured in an FSC and PEFC certified factory, the Kingspan TEK Cladding Building System panels can deliver U-values of 0.16 W/m2.K, eliminating the need for additional insulation.
For the Lewes project, 142mm thick panels were airtight jointed to reduce the building’s long-term heating requirements.
The Rooflight Association has published a series of ‘Quickguides’, covering the fire rating requirements for use of rooflights in buildings for each of the four devolved UK nations.
