Square-edged gypsum fibreboard panels from Fermacell have been used to line 13 modular garden lodges at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness.
The panels were specified by Carbon Dynamic for the 26m2 lodges, each comprises a king-size bed, en-suite and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Working alongside architects Keppie Design, the lodges were manufactured and fitted out at Carbon Dynamic’s factory in less than three weeks.
The lodges were then delivered on site and installed in less than two days onto pre-prepared, low-impact foundations in the hotel’s rear garden. The modular lodges were constructed entirely from Scots timber and laid out in a unique, sculptural curve.
The units each had direct access to the landscaped gardens and their own external garden spaces that provided an integration between the internal and external environments.
The garden-facing side of each module is fully glazed, whilst a natural stone wall was construction as an extension to an existing garden wall to create a bookend to the 400m2 development to conceal it from general view.
To create a rustic aesthetic sympathetic to the surround environment, an untreated larch was chosen for the external cladding. The Fermacell boards which clad the interior are fire resistant to Class A2-s1, d0 and boast a thermal conductivity of 0.32W/mk.
Carbon Dynamic Managing Director Matt Stevenson commented that the company always specifies Fermacell boarding for its projects, due to the product’s superior fire, insulation, acoustic and environmental credentials.
He said: “We specify fermacell for all our projects except where clients specify a timber finish. We have always resisted a switch to plasterboard. In this project it was used as a fine, crisp, high-quality modern wall and ceiling finish and as a contributor to the fire resistance and acoustic insulation.”
The Rooflight Association has published a series of ‘Quickguides’, covering the fire rating requirements for use of rooflights in buildings for each of the four devolved UK nations.
