Clamp-on flow meters monitor energy consumption at Northumbria University

  • 20 Jun 2016

Micronics’ U3000 clamp-on flow meters have been used to monitor heating and water consumption at Northumbria University’s campus.

The clamp-on flow meters were installed by Invisible Systems on every campus boiler, after Northumbria University set a target to reduce its excessively high energy consumption. It was important to know how much energy was required to heat individual campus buildings to reduce downtime of the heating and water systems.

A bespoke software programme collects the data from the clamp-on flow meters, providing Northumbria University with the information needed to allow buildings to operate in a more environmentally friendly way by highlighting where energy use can be reduced and where costs can be saved. If individual buildings were not in use, the flow of gas or water could be shut off.

The Micronics U3000 and Calec ST ModBus were successfully used to calculate usafe and control the boilers more effectively.

The flow meters are a cost effective alternative to traditional in-line meter installation. The device simply clamps onto the pipe, before it is connected to the power and the pipe’s diameter is entered. This was crucial for the University, which is busy almost 24/7 and could not afford a long downtime.

Northumbria University now plans to install more Micronics flow meters, particularly where they need to know how much energy is used in buildings part owned by them and part by a big supermarket chain.
