Safeguard Renovation Plaster Warnham

Dryzone renovation plaster key to Sussex restoration project

  • 28 Jun 2016

Dryzone Damp-Resistant Plaster has been used by Surrey Hills Preservation as part of the restoration of a 500 year old property in Warnham, West Sussex.

The main living room area of the property was showing signs of salt contamination and the plaster was crumbling and blistering.

After an initial survey, it was evident that the ‘pressure injection’ type of rising damp-proof course (DPC) carried out previously had now failed.

Following the application of the previous damp-proof course, the contractors had re-plastered the wall using a very dense sand and cement render, traditionally associated with condensation risk and poor insulation qualities. Sand and cement renders are unsuitable for heritage structures as they are inflexible, don’t breathe and can damage underlying brickwork.

Surrey Hills Preservation determined that in order to resolve the rising damp issue it was necessary to remove the older plaster, create an effective new DPC and re-plaster the walls using a heritage-friendly renovation plaster.

Heritage-friendly and damp-resistant plaster

Safeguard Europe’s Dryzone DPC Cream was first applied by Surrey Hills Preservation once the walls had been taken back to the bare brick. Once the BBA-approved Dryzone cream had cured to create a new chemical DPC, the walls were able to be re-plastered.

The Dryzone Damp-Resistant Plaster was then applied. The plaster can be applied to walls whilst they are still damp and has a porous structure which controls salt migration, allows walls to dry out by evaporation and results in a higher thermal resistance, reducing the risk of condensation.

Further reasons for specifying Dryzone Plaster include its low compressive strength, high water vapour diffusion and conformity for the EN998-1 CE Standard as ‘Renovation Mortars’.

By using the high-strength chemical DPC alongside the Dryzone Damp-Resistant Plaster, the property will be preserved for years to come whilst providing occupants with a dry and comfortable environment.
