Gilberts has designed and engineered the louvres and support steelwork for Penrhyndeudraeth’s new special education school, Ysgol Hafod Lon Newydd.
Issued by Gwynedd Council, the new £13 million development has been built to accommodate 100 pupils from around Meirionydd and Dwyfor with special educational requirements.
Wynne Construction was contracted to build the school: to deliver maximum community benefits, the company employed apprentices and introduced practical work experience for college students.
Whilst aspiring to provide training opportunities through the local supply chain, Wynne Construction also hosted educational activities, which have included site visits and teaching the children from the existing Hafod Lon School about health and safety in building.
To extend the community benefits further, Wynne Construction implemented sustainable strategies throughout. For instance, a bespoke-engineered louvre screening plant was requested to hide the air handling units and mechanical plant from view, reducing the visual impact on the surrounding area.
Gilberts was specified to design and engineer the louvres and supporting steelwork. Aluminium and steel were combined to create the screen, which spans 28 metres. Whilst successfully concealing the air handling units, the structure works to protect them from the volatile local weather.
Gilberts’ solution has been developed to ensure that the whole school benefits from a low environmental impact approach. Using English aluminium and Welsh steel, the system was designed and manufactured completely in-house in the company’s local factory, which is located up the coast from the school.
