New brochure outlines PVC construction benefits

  • 2 Aug 2016

VinylPlus has published a new brochure, ‘Vinyl in European Stadiums’, which celebrates the role PVC plays in the construction of modern sports venues.

The publication aims to demonstrate the benefits of PVC: focusing on sustainable development, it explores how, by using vinyl materials in construction, sports complexes can achieve architectural greatness, whilst fulfilling environmental responsibility.

The brochure provides an overview of the advances made in building materials and techniques over the centuries. It provides details on the construction of Ancient Greece’s classic amphitheatres, which utilised marble, to today’s sports arenas, which benefit from the use of PVC materials.

PVC in modern venues

PVC materials used for Allianz Riviera StadiumIt also highlights a number of case studies: Nice’s Allianz Riviera Stadium, which hosted several games in the recent UEFA Euro 2016 Championships, demonstrates how PVC can be used as a sustainable solution for large public venues.

The stadium, which seats 35,000 people, benefits from a façade of transparent PVC tensile fabric membrane, which allows daylight to enter the venue. Meanwhile, a PVC roof improves the stadium’s acoustics.

Vinyl offers a flexible building solution: suitable for use as flooring, cables, roofing and façade membranes and piping, the long-lasting material is aesthetically-pleasing and completely recyclable.

The PVC membrane which was used for the London 2012’s Olympic Games was later reused in Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games, for example; vinyl flooring utilised by the athletes has now been fitted inside a school based in Kent.

VinylPlus Voluntary Commitment

‘Vinyl in European Stadiums’ showcases the versatility of PVC as a building material.

The VinylPlus Voluntary Commitment aims to establish a framework for the European PVC industry, to encourage sustainable development. By demonstrating how PVC can fulfil architectural and technical design requirements, as well as sustainable objectives, the brochure has been designed to support its agenda.
