Fermacell has contributed 14,000 square metres of gypsum fibreboard to the multi-million pound redevelopment of Aberdeen Art Gallery.
The redevelopment will see Aberdeen’s Cowdray Hall, Memorial Hall and Grade A-Listed gallery transformed into a contemporary complex for arts and music, which has been designed by Hoskins Architects.
The regenerated venue will include new exhibition and gallery spaces to showcase the work of Scottish colourists and modern artists from across the world. A new wing at the rear of the building will feature a community gallery; education facilities have been designed to encourage the people of Aberdeen to learn more about the arts.
In addition, Cowdray Hall will be upgraded to create a performance space, whilst the Memorial Hall will be treated with care and sensitivity.
Externally, a copper-clad rooftop extension will be constructed; the pitched roofs and skylights behind the parapets of the main building will be removed, and a level of accommodation for temporary galleries and a learning zone will be erected.
Square-edged gypsum fibreboards from Fermacell have been specified to dry-line the development throughout. DBM Building Contractors will install the boards, on behalf of the project’s main contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey.
The fermacell boards are capable of withstanding the weight of large paintings and objects: up to 30kg per screw and 50kg per cavity fixing can be hung from them. Offering a cost-effective alternative to pattressing, the boards are created from recycled materials; their specification will contribute towards the project’s overall BREEAM rating.
The Rooflight Association has published a series of ‘Quickguides’, covering the fire rating requirements for use of rooflights in buildings for each of the four devolved UK nations.
