Johnstone's decorating allowance scheme

Decorating allowance scheme enables council house upgrades

  • 7 Sep 2016

Over the past three years, Johnstone’s Trade has enabled over 650 residents of North West Leicestershire District Council to create colourful interiors for their homes, via its decorating allowance scheme

Designed to allow access to quality decorating products, the scheme was picked up by North West Leicestershire District Council in 2013. It enables housing associations and local authorities to provide their residents with decorating materials from Johnstone’s Trade’s nationwide Decorating Centres.

The decorating materials are available via three methods: monetary vouchers, points or decorating packs. The council chose the latter.

Through Johnstone’s Trade’s online management system, the council is able to activate and cancel packs accordingly. The system provides an insight into spend levels and enables users to monitor the packs; council members can see which member of staff has administered an order, and which resident has redeemed it.

The system works to produce comprehensive data on pack redemptions, expiries, deliveries and order collections. Johnstone’s can provide administrative assistance via a dedicated ‘help’ area.

Andrew Wallace, the council’s principal housing management team leader, believes that the residents have benefited from the packs; by using the materials supplied, they are able to create bright interiors to personalise their homes.
