The Kingspan TEK Building System has been specified for a ski chalet in the French Alps that reflects the owners’ passion for sustainable design.
400m2 of the Kingspan TEK Building System was fitted by Westwind Oak to complement the building’s green oak frame, helping to maintain the fast installation programme required to complete the build on schedule.
The system is made up of pre-cut structural insulated panels (SIPs), made to fit with the oak frame to limit on-site alterations and waste.
The nature of the design of a traditional ski chalet meant there were some specific design requirements to consider, for example, the large roof overhangs and extrusions of the oak frame outside of the SIP panels.
A first floor viewing deck was also created with a large angled overspan of the roof to provide views to the mountain setting whilst protecting the building from the elements.
As up to 2 metres of snow can gather on the roof, extra beams were added for support to the Kingspan TEK panels. The low roof angle was used to ensure that the snow sits on the roof, helping to further insulate the building in the colder months.
The use of 142mm Kingspan TEK panels helped deliver U-values of 0.20 W/m2K. A special tape was used to allow the green oak frame to freely move, maintaining an airtight structure.
The manufacturing facility where the Kingspan TEK Building System is produced carries both FSC® (FSC®-C109304) and PEFC Chain of Custody certification.
