Burry Port Community School is the first Passivhaus School in Wales. Built to accommodate 210 pupils and a 30 space nursery class, the sustainable school is the result of a design collaboration between Carmarthenshire County Council and Architype architects.
The Passivhaus school is a prime example of how Troldtekt acoustic panels can be used to create an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable environment whilst reducing noise pollution.
The Burry Port Community School has been refurbished and transformed to meet the Passivhaus standard, in-keeping with Carmarthenshire’s ongoing commitment towards long-term sustainability.
The redevelopment consisted of a complete refurbishment of the original school building, whilst the extended block accommodates four new classrooms, in addition to two further teaching spaces, staff and meeting room facilities. A dynamic multi-use ‘pod’ has also been created to provide recreation and performance space.
Passivhaus is based on high quality design with a focus on continuous airtightness, insulation and solar gain, to offer low energy performance and high internal comfort.
As part of the target to achieve the Passivhaus standard, Troldtekt acoustic ceiling panels were specified. The 100 percent natural wood fibre panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability, documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level.
The Troldtekt panels are available in a variety of sizes and in three grades, from ultrafine to coarse.
