Clos-o-Mat Space to Change toilet

Space to Change campaign backed by Clos-o-Mat

  • 25 Nov 2016

Clos-o-Mat is supporting the Space to Change campaign, which urges commercial and public venues to extend their wheelchair-accessible toileting facilities to accommodate everyone’s needs.

The Space to Change campaign aims to encourage architects, designers, service providers and retail SMEs to take on an inclusive approach when considering a refurbishment.

The campaign has been developed to improve the usability of wheelchair-accessible toilets in public spaces, to ensure that the needs of those who need help with their personal hygiene are being met.

To meet the campaign’s requirements, existing wheelchair-accessible facilities should fit an adult-sized changing bench and a hoist.

Hosted online by Firefly Friends, the campaign argues that public spaces could increase traffic and make additional profit by employing these methods; suitable facilities ensure that everyone can enjoy a day out, regardless of their personal hygiene requirements.

Building Regulations Approved Document M 2013 insists that public buildings implement accessible toilet facilities. If there is only room for one toilet, it should be a unisex, wheelchair-accessible one. As the Space to Change campaign points out, fitting a table and a hoist does not require any additional space.
