Temporary market wins Sweden’s most prestigious design award

  • 9 Mar 2017

A temporary market hall was built in Stockholm’s Ostermalm as a temporary space while the old market hall is being renovated. The market hall, however, has since gone on to win Sweden’s most prestigious design award.

Built in 1886, the old market hall is known for the prestige its history carries among its committed customers. However, in 2012 the hall faced a critical need for a complete renovation.

Therefore, the entrepreneurs of the market hall required a place to relocate to. The solution was to build a temporary building made of Metsa Wood‘s Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber). Consequently, the building is easy to take down and reuse elsewhere.

Tengbom, the architectural agency, designed the concept of a temporary, modular wooden building that could rebuilt alongside the old hall. Aiming to promote sustainable construction, Kerto LVL was the ideal choice.

The temporary market hall is a combination of wood, glass and plastic, therefore making it lightweight, easy to work with and affordable.

Glulam columns and Kerto LVL beams in a grid structure, make up the building’s roof structure, making it strong while making the construction appear lighter and requiring less material. The roof above the grid is made of plywood clad with sound-absorbing insulation made from wood fibre. The acoustics are one of the most successful elements of the project.

The building has a good insulation value due to the plastic used being multichannel plastic with lots of air pockets. The plastic parts are completely prefabricated and are airtight, watertight and naturally insulated. The glass in the windows is also insulated.

In addition, the wooden parts guarantee the fire safety of the temporary market hall due to a fire protection treatment. The beams are painted with a transparent fire-retardant coating on site, and the plywood of the desks and floors has had a similar treatment. The floors and the columns were covered with plasterboard up to a height of three metres.

So far, the market hall has received over 55,000 visitors per week – almost a 100% increase compared to the old hall. The temporary market hall offers longer opening hours and has attracted new visitors.

The refurbishment of the old market hall will be completed in 2018.
