Kingspan procures 57% of energy from renewables

  • 26 May 2017

Kingspan is celebrating beating Net Zero Energy targets as 57% of Kingspan’s energy was procured from renewables in 2016.

Kingspan has announced that it has beaten its target of generating at least half its aggregate energy use from renewable resources by 2016. Kingspan’s aggregate renewable energy use was 57% of its total energy use in 2016, meaning the company is on track to hit its goal of operating at Net Zero Energy by 2020.

In addition, Kingspan Insulated Panels UK achieved 66% of its Net Zero Energy commitment across its three UK sites.

In the UK, Kingspan Insulated Panels has recently received planning permission to install a new wind turbine at its site in Holywell. The turbine is expected to generate over 2,000,000 kWh of energy and offset over 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Meanwhile, Kingspan Insulation has installed a 1,400 kWh biomass boiler at its Pembridge site, providing High Temperature Hot Water to its Kooltherm curing ovens and laminator.

Kingspan is aiming to reduce its energy foot print by saving more energy, generating more renewable energy and buying more renewable energy. Energy efficiency measures introduced by Kingspan have reduced the company’s overall lighting and heat costs by over 30% and achieved almost a four-fold decrease in carbon intensity levels.

Kingspan’s on-site renewable energy generation has jumped from 6.6 GWh in 2012 to 32.2 GWh in 2016 through the use of solar, wind and biomass technologies. On-site generation across multiple sites globally currently supplies 7.6% of the company’s totally energy use, and more projects are now under construction.

The company has also taken steps to ensure that where renewable energy can’t be produced on-site, it is procured from fully-certified sources. In 2016 all the electricity used at manufacturing sites in North America was procured from certified renewable sources. Globally in 2016, the Group used 164.2 GWh of renewable electricity, almost a six-fold increase from 2011.

Biance Wong, Divisional Sustainability Manager at Kingspan Insulated Panels UK commented on beating the 50% NZE milestone: “We have succeeded because every part of the business pulls its weight and makes reducing Kingspan’s carbon footprint a key business objective. At Kingspan Insulated Panels UK, we have taken particular pride in exceeding the Group target, largely through the use of renewable sources.”

Kingspan has been able to achieve its goals, reducing its impact of the environments, while growing its business at a record pace through acquisitions and strong organic growth. Kingspan now has over 10,000 employees and more than 90 manufacturing plants operating across the world. Kingspan Insulation and Kingspan Insulated Panels employ a combined total of over 1500 staff across six manufacturing and distribution facilities in the UK.
