Commercial flag paving donated to award-winning show garden

Demonstrating its support for the Institute of Quarrying, Charcon has donated a selection of commercial flag paving and kerbs to its ‘Quarry Garden’, which featured at the annual RHS Chatsworth Flower Show last week.

In celebration of its centenary, the Institute of Quarrying entered the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show with the ‘Quarry Garden’. The construction honours the important role that quarrying and mineral extraction play in modern life, highlighting how land is protected and preserved throughout the extraction process.

The initial garden concept was produced by horticultural students from Nottingham Trent University, as part of a project; Paul Hervey-Brookes, an award-winning garden designer, then worked to develop their ideas into a completed design.

The students learnt how a show garden is created, witnessing the growing process through  to the construction phase. They also participated in a tour of the Hulland Ward factory, home to Aggregate Industries’ commercial hard landscaping division, Charcon, to gain a better understanding of the manufacturing process behind commercial and domestic landscaping.

The completed garden impressed the RHS judges: it was awarded ‘Best in Show’, a Gold Medal award, and ‘Best Construction’. Following its success, it will be installed as a permanent fixture within the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Charcon contributed its 600mm x 600mmx EcoPave Textured flag paving to the project. The product, which was specified in the shade Grey Fleck, was used throughout the garden.

The paving comprises 50% recycled or reclaimed materials, and Cornish aggregates for enhanced durability and aesthetic appeal.

Charcon’s Eco Countryside Kerb provided edging for the garden. Like EcoPave, it has been designed to replicate the look of natural granite. The kerb boasts impressive environmental credentials, being made up of 82% recycled or reclaimed material content.

On their factory visit, the horticultural students were able to see the Eco Countryside Kerb being produced; they also discovered how aggregates and cement are stored, and how they are transported and integrated into different methods of production.
