Changing Places at Cotswold Wildlife Park

Changing Places WC specified for Cotswold Wildlife Park

  • 21 Aug 2017

Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens has improved accessibility for all by issuing the installation of a new Changing Places toilet.

Thanks to Changing Places, thousands of people with limitations can visit the Oxfordshire estate without worrying about away from home toileting.

The new toilet is conveniently located between the gift shop and car park. Unlike the four wheelchair-accessible toilets, which are already available at the park, the Changing Places has enough space to accommodate a user and two carers.

Additional equipment includes an adult-sized height adjustable changing bench, and a ceiling track hoist; all was provided by Closomat

Changing Places installation

The installation was suggested by Tony Clough MBE, a Changing Places campaigner. ‘Conventional wheelchair-accessible toilets are designed on the assumption that the user can transfer from their wheelchair unaided, and use the toilet without help,’ he explains.

However, for a large proportion of disabled people in Britain, the standard accessible toilet unsuitable: it does not have the space to accommodate a carer, and does not include a hoist for lifting. If a disabled user needs changing, they must lie on the floor.

Tony continues: ‘Changing Places gives these people the opportunity to do something that most of us take for granted: go somewhere, knowing there are suitable toilet facilities.’

Changing Places facilities are considered ‘desirable’ in public buildings, under Building Regulations and British Standards (BS8300).  However, despite that fact that almost 1,000 have been opened across the UK, the Cotswold estate is in the small 10% of wildlife parks that have these toilets or similar facilities.
