Smoke ventilation and control systems from SE Controls have been specified to create a safe living environment at Cambridge Street, a new, Manchester-based residential development.
The high-rise development, which was designed by Hodder & Partners, offers 282 rental apartments, spread across two towers. It has become a prominent feature of the Manchester skyline, with its white tile cladding providing a visual contrast with the neighbouring red brick buildings.
In addition to aesthetics, fire safety was prioritised as an important design consideration. With such a large number of apartments to protect, SE Controls was contacted to provide an integrated solution.
Smoke ventilation and control systems from SE Controls were installed to keep the escape staircases, which are located in the centre of each tower, clear of smoke in the unfortunate event of a fire.
Each storey has been fitted with an automatically opening smoke vent door, leading to a dedicated smoke shaft that accommodates an automatic SHEVTEC louvre at roof level; this allows smoke and hot air to be vented.
The smoke vent doors utilise BS EN 12101-compliant actuators, which are controlled by a number of OSLoop controllers. In the event of a fire, this technology responds immediately to ensure that the appropriate doors are opened, and smoke is released.
Additional corridor roof vents have been incorporated on the top floor of each block. These are also operated by SHEVTEC control panels.
The building makes use of SECloudlink, a remote services solution that draws on 4G communications technology to provide constant system status information. Data can be displayed remotely, enabling facilities and building managers to monitor the smoke control system.
