Zehnder wants to raise awareness of standard for thermal outputs

  • 4 Sep 2017

Zehnder Group UK is encouraging use of the new EN standard which aims to change how thermal output is measured for closed ceiling panels.

Manufacturers should be aware of the new EN standard, EN 14037-5, and be actively abiding by it when publishing product performance data and specifying ceiling panels.

Zehnder Group UK believes that awareness of the new EN standard should be raised for specifiers, as specifiers and manufacturers are responsible for adhering to it. Zehnder also thinks that all manufacturers should adhere to the new standard when making public claims about the thermal outputs of their ceiling panels.

Zehnder is demonstrating best practice by measuring the thermal output of all of its relevant products in accordance with the new standard, even though this can make these products seem to have a disadvantage in thermal-output which in reality does not exist.

Ceiling panel and closed ceiling panels can have their thermal output calculated in accordance with the current EN 14037-2 standard and expressed as w/m or in accordance with the new EN 14037-5 standard and expressed as w/m2, leading to numerous different results.

The standard applies to the measurement of thermal output of closed ceilings, specifically, in addition to ceiling panels. Introduced in November 2016, it was developed by the EMCP (European Manufacturers of Ceiling Panels) and measures thermal output in units of w/m2. The standard was preceded by EN 14037-2, which was introduced in February 2003, which measures output as w/m.

Both EN standards differ in how heat outputs are derived, based on calculating the panel area, which results in the output figures being lower when EN 14037-5 is adopted.
