Hull volunteers put on the map by Crown

  • 28 Feb 2018

Crown Paints has helped recognise the endeavours of over 2,500 volunteers, who worked tirelessly to ensure Hull UK City of Culture 2017 was a spectacular success.

Artist Julia Vogl, who specialises in public art, has created an exciting space in the Humber Street Gallery to embody the spirit of the people who powered the event.

She has conjured an experience which give people the impression they are walking into a graph, expressing the thoughts of the volunteers involved in the programme ‘joy, fantastic, life changing, exciting, urgent, challenging and fun,’ to name just a few!

Julia said: “When I saw the Humber Street Gallery space, I started to think of it holistically and was encouraged to create a work that would get volunteers in the making of the show.

“It was at that point I thought that if I could get a lot of paint I could easily engage volunteers of all abilities to take part in transforming the gallery.

“It was then I was introduced to Crown Paints and I am so grateful to them and the volunteers for their enthusiasm in supporting the vision.”

Crown Paints’ products were used in a whopping 56 colours, three of which were custom made for the artwork, through a wall and floor surface covering 312 square metres.

The project wraps up a successful time for Crown Paints as Business Club partners to Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

The year-long event has provided a national and international platform to showcase its colour expertise and celebrate the transformational power of culture.

Projects have included striking murals in the fishing area of Hessle Road, as well the bespoke backdrop for the 2017 shortlisted Turner Prize artists to display their work at Ferens Art Gallery.

Ellis Mudd is Site Manager at Crown Paints Hull manufacturing centre and was happy to have left a ‘lasting legacy with projects people can look back on for years to come, such as the Hessle Road murals.’

“We’ve brought colour to Hull through our expertise, pride and passion and it has been an incredible experience,” he added.
