Leading specialist contractor Prater will deliver the full envelope solution, including roofing, façade and glazing, to Boeing’s new GoldCare Maintenance Hangar at Gatwick Airport.
The multi-million pound project will see the creation of a commercial aviation maintenance hangar to support Boeing’s European GoldCare customers.
At 32m high, the high bay hangar allows flexibility of use, with the ability to house multiple aircrafts from the Boeing fleet as well as adding to Gatwick’s engineering capacity
With the magnitude of the project in mind, main contractor Sisk needed a supply chain that could adequately deliver a high quality, fast paced programme.
With plenty expertise and a successful history of projects in the aviation sector, Prater has been selected to provide the full external envelope.
Looking at the original specification, the Prater team put forward changes to the roofing panels to provide a roofing system that would be all encompassing and help to achieve both cost and programme certainty.
Furthermore, the Prater technical team created a mock up of the roof, capping and facade interface, allowing the end client to see exactly what the finished product would look like and allowing changes to be made accordingly before getting onsite.
Benefitting from the use of BIM throughout the planning stage, Prater’s specialist design team created 3D drawings of the whole project.
As a result, Prater could provide those working on the project with a clear vision, alleviating any possible issues as quickly as possible.
This proactive approach during the initial planning stages will help guarantee the build programme runs as smooth as possible.
Karl Moxon, Bid Manager at Prater, commented: “Through the use of 3D modelling and a collaborative working relationship with our supply chain, we have been able to determine what ultimately is in the best interests of the project to successfully move forward.
“Yet another project that is reeping the rewards of an honest and transparent tender process where the project requirements and deliverables are at heart of the decision making.
“After detailed preparation throughout the design and planning stages of this project, we are excited for works to officially get underway onsite.”
Prater’s work at Gatwick Airport is expected to start onsite this month.
