Ravenscraig tower block is 18 storeys tall. The building is characteristic of the no-fines construction methods that were used in the 1960s when it was built.
Fife Council recently targeted Ravenscraig for renovation, including it in a programme of works to improve its housing stock.
The programme aims to solve the problems of cold, damp and water ingress that are commonly found in no-fines properties.
Alumasc’s Swistherm EWI system was specified for use in the refurbishment the building’s exterior.
The system is BBA approved and holds certification from the Energy Savings Trust.
The EWI system enables the fabric of the building to act as a heat store. This increases thermal efficiency.
The system has also been designed to abolish cold bridging and condensation and prevent the growth of mould.
10,000 square metres of the External Wall Insulation system were installed by the contractors for the project, ECL Contracts.
As the system is available with a range of design and specification options, the contractors were able to finish the lower storeys of the tower block in a darker colour.
Alumasc’s technical team provided the contractors with structural engineering reports to help them fit the system to the external walls. They also remained on site to provide help with the installation process when it was required.
Alumasc’s high-rise buildings policy was to be implemented to ensure that the site was safe to work on.
