The construction of the photovoltaic park began in 2013 on the site of a former contaminated railway sleeper production plant.
SUNTEC Energiesysteme GmbH chose DuPont Plantex Gold non-woven weed control barrier as a solution for use on the weed-infested ground.
Distributed by Root Barrier B.V, the product was specified to maintain the efficiency of the solar park.
Plantex Gold is made from polypropylene. The thermally bonded material combines both weed control and soil erosion control in one product. It can be used on a variety of soils.
Because of the soil’s contamination, anchor pins could not be used to secure the fabric to the ground. Therefore, the Plantex weed material was cut and rolled out on the 18,000 square metre area and secured by the rail profiles of the photovoltaic panels.
Plantex Gold can be left exposed for up to 5 years, as it has been designed to be UV and weather resistant. However, SUNTEC Energiesysteme GmbH chose to cover the fabric with a gravel layer of 5cm thick to give it additional protection from UV.
The decision has extended the lifespan of the product to up to 25 years.
