Secondary glazing addresses noise pollution in London new builds

  • 12 Jan 2015

Selectaglaze fitted the new properties with secondary glazing to reduce drafts and noise pollution

The neglected establishments, which are Grade II listed, have been remodelled to create luxury apartments and have been fitted with Selectaglaze’s secondary glazing at the architect’s request.

Noise reductions of 45dB can be achieved by secondary windows when they are fitted with a 100-200mm gap and the tightly sealed frames are also designed to reduce drafts.

Selectaglaze’s use of low emissivity glass helps minimise heat loss to give the secondary windows a U-value of around 1.9.

A range of different designs were developed by Selectaglaze to meet the individual performance requirements of the apartments. One noisy balcony, for example, was fitted with large hinged secondary doors, glazed with 10.8mm laminated glass.

The completed properties were awarded an Eco Homes ‘Excellent’ rating.
