Heritage building benefits from secondary glazing

The iconic Elephant House is renowned for its decorative brick and terracotta panels

The Elephant House was granted Grade II Listing in 2009; its curved elevations and decorative brick and terracotta panels are of particular architectural interest.

Following the decision to change the Victorian building into an office space, HawkinsBrown was commissioned to draw up plans for refurbishment in 2013.

As part of the project, the building’s original single glazed windows needed to be changed.

However, the windows could not be replaced, despite the fact that they were unable to keep out draught and the sound of the busy roads outside.

Secondary glazing solution

Selectaglaze was enlisted to devise a solution using bespoke secondary glazing.

8 windows were treated with two different styles of openings from Selectaglaze’s heritage range.

Selectaglaze’s secondary glazing was specified to provide thermal insulation and noise attenuation

The majority of the openings benefited from the installation of a single hinged panel with a curved head. Mimicking the original, the panel allows for access to the primary window.

In two areas, lift-outs had to be used due to a lower ceiling level causing an obstruction when the window furniture was mounted.

Whilst functional, the flush hinges and locks that were installed did not compromise the traditional aesthetic of the Victorian windows and offered a discreet solution.
