Solid surface material, HI-MACS, has been used in the construction of a new headquarters, which has been designed by Italian archiect, Ilaria Moss, for Inox Fondi Srl of Villamarzana, Rovigo.
Inox Fondi, which specialises in the production of stainless-steel dished heads, was searching for a contemporary style to set up its new office block on the main façade of its adminstrative and manufacturing complex.
With its modern appaearance, HI-MACS was specified to create a staircase on three floors, to provide a contrasting element inside the building.
Offering transparency, brightness and colour uniformity, the solid surface material is frequently used to complete projects with definite personalities.
The side and underneath of the metal staircase are covered in plasterboard, whilst the internal parts of the risers and treads have been formed using HI-MACS. Each step has been made using a hand-shaped rough wood template, meaning that nothing about the structure is standardised.
The shape of the structure, which rises from the inner gate of the building like a helix, is highlighted in places by strips of light.
In order to achieve the illusion of a single surface, without any change of material between dark and light, the architect chose to experiment with a backlit system. The steps were miled to accommodate LED lights.
Fastening onto and releasing from the structure via a magnet system, the stairs can be easily removed; this means that the electric system can be accessed efficiently in the case of a fault.
HI-MACS Generation Acrylic Stone has also been used to create a meeting room table, which follows a horizontal 240cm top before turning into a slim leg.
This unique piece was created to link the major architectural piece of the building with a small detail in the meeting room.
