The 'leaf-shaped' porch at Redfields garden centre, achieved using Protan's single ply membrane

Single ply roofing membrane specified for ‘leaf-shaped’ porch

  • 10 Nov 2015

Protan’s SE single ply roofing membrane has been specified to deliver maximum impact with minimal environmental repercussions at Redfields Garden Centre in Fleet.

After Blue Diamond Group acquired the centre, Newspan Building Solutions designed and detailed an entire new structure for the building from ground to roof; including a 5,700m2 steel frame structure with double-glazed curtain walling, and a 57m long, leaf-shaped curving porch.

Through the installation of Protan’s single ply membrane, the porch adds to the building’s presence whilst providing a dry access for visitors and reducing potential nuisance to neighbouring residential properties from solar glare. It also serves to help achieve compliance with Building Regulations Part L.

The top of the porch is stepped, with a 100mm drop between the two sections. Each porch roof section features ‘ribs’ to reflect leaf veining, with the front edge tapered to reflect undulations.

300m2 of Protan SE1.6 single ply membrane was mechanically fixed onto the porch roof by Latchmore Roofing, with two different shades of grey specified for each section. It was also used to trim into the steel i-beam along the facing edge.

Manufactured at Protan’s headquarters in Norway, Protan SE has been developed to withstand the extreme weather conditions of Scandinavia. The membrane has a tensile strength of ≥1050N, and tear resistance ≥210N.

The roofing membrane delivers a reduced risk of fracturing even extreme colds; and can still be folded at -30°C, with a proven life span in excess of 30 years without suffering performance-affect degradation.

Protan SE membrane is part of Protan’s comprehensive range of single ply roofing solutions, covered in detail on Protan’s dedicated website.
