Protan single ply roofing vacuum system at Beith Street

Single ply vacuum system specified for student roofing

Protan‘s single ply roofing vacuum system has been installed to protect the 1,750m2 roof of a new student housing development in Scotland.

Property developer Downing has contributed two ten-storey student accommodation blocks to house Glasgow’s ever increasing student population.

Delivering over 700 student rooms, the multi-million pound Beith Street project has benefited from the installation of Protan’s single ply roofing vacuum system.

Due to the complexity and height of the building’s roof, an adhered system would have required multiple fixings. Protan’s technology met the property developer’s requirements, offering a quick and flexible installation process; the system was effectively installed around the roof’s service penetrations.

The roof’s polystyrene and mineral wool insulation was fitted with a bituminous vapour control layer; Protan’s EXG 1.6mm membrane was then laid directly on top and mechanically fixed at the perimeter.

Protan’s vacuum vents were inserted across the roof plane to draw air from between the membrane and the airtight substrate below. The vents work to encourage the single ply to adhere to the roof structure.

The system can help a building to achieve or exceed the requirements of Building Regulations Approved Document L, as the construction process avoids penetration of the vapour control layer and the support structure.
