Theatre Royal benefits from SGK waterproofing system

SGK waterproofing system used in Theatre Royal renovation

  • 29 Feb 2016

Dumfries’ Theatre Royal has undergone an extensive refurbishment, which has overseen a series of flat roof restorations, as well as the construction of an extension. Sika-Trocal’s SGK waterproofing system was used on the project to provide an impermeable finish.

Erected in 1792, the Theatre Royal is widely renowned as Scotland’s oldest working theatre. It was closed for a £1.9 million modernisation in 2014: the refurbishment aimed to include an upgraded auditorium and new public foyer areas, in addition to some studio and workshop facilities.

To carry out these project requirements, ARPL Architects designed an extension to the theatre’s box office and café, which incorporates the neighbouring building. Sika-Trocal’s SGK membrane was specified to waterproof the extension, in addition to a number of existing flat roof areas that were in need of attention.

Installed by McConnell Roofing, the SGK waterproofing system required minimal fixings into the existing structure, allowing for a straightforward application over the theatre’s flat roof.

Over 200 square metres was specified for the extensive installation.

The membrane, which is fully bonded, is suitable for applications in both warm roof and cold roof construction; it can be used effectively in new build applications, as well as in refurbishment projects.

Offering flexibility and weather resistance, the system has a BBA-approved life expectancy of over 35 years.
