Roof-Pro has delivered a bespoke roof access system for an extension at the Royal Derby Hospital, which has been built to accommodate an MRI scanner and its associated equipment.
The company was contracted to fabricate roof access systems for the whole of the new building; its design had to grant safe and easy access to the MRI scanner’s rooftop-mounted chiller unit, which requires a service check at least quarterly.
Roof-Pro was tasked with providing stable, non-penetrative support for the hospital’s chiller and Air Handling Units (AHUs), as well as a waterproof method of bringing cables and pipes from the units down into the building.
Taking the weight of the chiller unit and the load-bearing capabilities of the roof into account, Roof-Pro created a Chiller Support Platform to support the system.
Step-Overs were designed to fit the chiller platform and surrounding roof structure, to allow for the maintenance and inspection of the units. A Roof Penetration Box was also provided to ensure a watertight seal at the point where the unit’s power and water cabling pass through the surface of the roof.
Roof-Pro carried out the multi-component installation in conjunction with contractors Mellor Bromley Mechanical Services, which delivered the chiller and AHUs, and Derwent Valley Construction, which were responsible for the rooftop’s fabric.
The components were installed within time and budget, allowing for the swift completion of the project.
