Protan single ply membrane covers new station

  • 17 Feb 2017

As part of the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme, new opportunities and connections for train travel are being brought with the new £41million Edinburgh Gateway Interchange station.

Much of the roofing of the new facility comprises single ply membrane, from Protan, specified by IDP Architects LLP, delivered by Balfour Beatty & Lakesmere for Network Rail Scotland as part of a £742million railway network improvement scheme.

Connecting the platforms to the adjacent tram stop, approximately 900m2 of dark grey Protan SE1.6mm single ply, mechanically fixed, forms the five roofs over the platform circulation areas, pedestrian footbridge, plant room, transformer room and station building.

Furthermore, a Protain Progrip R walkway system is incorporated in the roofs over the platform circulation areas, providing grip for maintenance workers and Omega profiles for aesthetic interest.

Protan SE membrane was designed to cope with extreme weather conditions without detriment, tested and certified independently to provide durability and weather protection without degradation for up to 30 years. Additionally, air leakage is controlled in line with the latest building regulations.

Impervious to all weathers and designed for heavy foot traffic, the 14mm thick Protan Progrip R has a high slip resistance, required for potentially risky locations, with its cross-directional top ribs and a ‘diamond cut’ top surface.
