Sustainable fibre cement specified for urban low carbon housing project

  • 23 Mar 2017

Marley Eternit’s fibre cement slates, cladding and profiled sheeting have been used by sustainable developer CITU for a low carbon housing development in Sheffield.

The eco-friendly development, Little Kelham, comprises 153 energy efficient homes in addition to communal spaces, shops and a bakery.

Situated on the site of the former Richardsons cutlery factory in the Kelham Island area, a range of sustainable fibre cement materials from the Marley Eternit range were specified by CITU to reflect the site’s industrial heritage within the townhouses and apartments.

Marley Eternit P3 Profiled Sheeting, Thrutone slates and EQUITONE cladding were used, contrasting between grey tiles and black corrugated sheets on the façades to create a distinctive urban aesthetic, whilst retaining the project’s low carbon philosophy.

Ben Neary, from CITU Developments, explains: “We chose fibre cement Profiled Sheeting, EQUITONE and Thrutone from Marley Eternit because the materials gave us the distinctive semi-industrial, yet contemporary, urban aesthetic we wanted to achieve while at the same time being low maintenance and very durable.

We also wanted to maximise the use of off-site construction processes and as a lightweight material, fibre cement slate cladding is ideal for this type of installation method.”

Marley Eternit’s fibre cement slate is 100 per cent recyclable and is available in a great variety of textures and colours. The product is very lightweight and can be installed both on site or at a factory.

Both Marley Eternit’s fibre cement slates and profiled sheeting boast a ‘Very Good’ BES 6001 responsible sourcing accreditation and the ability to achieve an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide.
