Protan roofing membranes specified for student developments 

Protan is working in conjunction with Roofdec and Torsion Group to deliver roofing schemes to student accommodation across the UK. 

Torison is currently working to redevelop two brownfield sites in Newcastle and Reading. More than 260 student bedrooms will be created as a result of the projects. 

Both roofing schemes feature membranes from Protan, which are being installed by Roofdec. Whilst the Reading development features a new roof-top extension, Newcastle has been completely reconstructed to create a cluster of apartments around a landscaped courtyard.

Prefabricated roofing solution

The Newcastle development features a green roof of 100 square metres, which has been constructed using the Protan G prefabricated membrane, a glass fibre reinforced and microbe durable PVC product.

Developed specifically for inverted, green and gravel ballasted roofs, the membrane is able to withstand attack by micro-organisms, and resist extreme weather conditions and temperatures. 

Protan’s prefabricated solution uses Proplan software for calculate the most efficient usage of material and minimise waste. The membrane is then manufactured according to the plan and factory-welded in a controlled environment. On site, the contractor has to fix along the edges and abutments, and detail round penetrations.

Single ply membrane 

The Reading development utilises Protan PEVCL and Protan SE1.8mm single ply membrane, which has been hot-air welded at joints and mechanically-fixed to the roof, over PIR insulation.

The membrane can achieve air leakage controlled/minimised in accordance with the latest Building Regulations; it also complies with Approved Document L’s energy efficiency requirements, and is BBA certified.  The single ply membrane is available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm.
