Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) now features a Closomat Changing Places assisted accessible toilet, as part of a £4million refurbishment and upgrade of the departure lounge.
Britain’s leading provider of assisted accessible toilet solutions’ Changing Places toilet gives more space so to accommodate a wheelchair user and up to two carers.
It includes a ceiling track hoist, mobile changing bench and height adjustable washbasin, plus it is electronically accessed, with a call point and camera.
Colin Swaine, Liverpool John Lennon Airport Director of Operations, said feedback they have had made them hope to install a Changing Places for many years, stating the refurb of the departure lounge was an ideal chance to do just that.
He said it will integrate nicely into the airport’s reputation as a friendly airport and will have a positive effect towards customer satisfaction.
Tony Clough MBE is Britain’s leading Changing Places campaigner and officially opened the new facility at Liverpool’s biggest airport.
“Imagine if you couldn’t find a suitable toilet while waiting to catch a plane, having a drink or a meal out, while shopping?” he said.
“Without the additional facilities a Changing Places offers, at least 1 in 260 people face that situation. They are restricted in what they can do, where they can go, because, when they need the toilet, they need someone to help them, they need lifting, they need changing.
“None of these can be addressed in a conventional wheelchair-accessible toilet.”
He added this new facility means tens of thousands of disabled people know if they need the toilet, there is somewhere suitable for them and creates more choice.
Building Regulations and British Standards stipulate a Changing Places toilet is ‘desirable’ in buildings where large numbers of the public have access. Since being introduction ten years ago, over 1000 have opened nationwide.
