Charcon supplies High Street redevelopment in Ponders End

  • 1 Nov 2018

Charcon, the hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has supplied a multi-million pound project to redevelop Ponders End High Street in Enfield.

Work commenced on improvements early last year, after funding was granted from Transport for London to make large scale alterations to the way the street looked and worked.

Improvements included providing more space, better access and crossings for pedestrians, easing congestion and reducing collisions and introducing new trees, seating and attractive paving.

Transport for London appointed Ringway Jacobs and consultant engineers, The Project Centre, to take on the programme of works; having worked with Charcon extensively on projects in and around London, including the Mayor’s Super Cycle Highway 2, The Project Centre and Ringway Jacobs specified Charcon for the hard landscaping elements of the project.

Initially, a 150mm deep granite block paver was considered for the main carriageway, to guarantee strength and performance, but this proved cost prohibitive.

Working with Ringway Jacobs, The Project Centre and Enfield Council, Charcon’s technical team value engineered a concrete solution from Charcon’s Andover range, that met both the necessary performance and visual requirements of the project, whilst substantially lowering the cost.

In total, Charcon supplied 5,945 square metres of its 80mm Andover Textured block paving and 2,995 square metres of its 150mm Andover Textured block paving, in a mix of Silver Fleck, Light Grey and Mid Grey shades.

Combining stylish appeal with incredible durability, Andover Textured is a premium quality range of flag and block paving product available in an extensive range of shades and sizes at an affordable price.

It incorporates uniquely formulated Cornish aggregates to offer all the hardwearing characteristics of granite, and comes in 13 different flag and block paving sizes developed for design flexibility and visual appeal.

A further 379 square metres of 80mm Andover Textured Infilta block paving in Silver Fleck, Light Grey and Mid Grey shades was supplied.

Hardwearing and durable, Infilta forms a permeable hard landscaped surface to provide water ingress for sustainable urban drainage systems.

The majority of the block paving products were used to deliver high quality footway paving, a fresh, attractive block-paved junction with crossing point, and two circular traffic schemes, known as roundels, with five courtesy crossings, to encourage drivers to take more care when driving.

Furthermore, Charcon supplied Natural Granite Kerbs and cycle way paving for use in the construction of the cycle lanes either side of the main road.

Mark Barter, Sales Director at Charcon, commented: “Engaging with the project partners at a very early stage of the process enabled us to work collaboratively to come up with a bespoke solution for the scheme.

“We were also able to ensure the strict delivery timescales of the project were met by coming up with effective logistics solutions centred on timed deliveries.”
