IKO PLC’s ‘Fix that Hut’ scheme has seen Islington & Stoke Newington Sea Cadets centre donated more than 250 square metres of IKO enertherm PIR insulation to them.
This was in order to repair the roof, bringing it up to the very highest standards.
In 2012, the cadets’ Canonbury Road centre had to close due to concerns surrounding fire safety, with inadequate building materials, as well as the roof and exits not being fit for purpose.
Derick Vellosa, an Islington Sea Cadets committee member, described it as ‘gutting’ when they were forced to close, referring to the process leading to it re-opening as a ‘hard slog’.
Jennifer McCavour, Chair of the Islington Sea Cadets’ Management Committee, called the IKO donation a ‘massive help’, saying they were ‘utterly delighted’ and that it was ‘fantastic to see a national company getting involved with local communities in this way’.
The centre was converted from an electricity substation in 1982, where it resembles a ship inside; it features rooms for radio and communications training, engineering and seamanship room, plus a first aid training suite, an indoor and outdoor parade ground and a mess deck.
Jennifer added that it will be a ‘fantastic facility when it’s all finished, we couldn’t have done it without the support of companies like IKO.”
