Protan’s single ply polymer membrane has been used by Willmott Dixon in the creation of a new, multi-million pound Intelligent Energy System Demonstrator (IESD) at the University of Chester.
An existing building at the university has been refurbished in order to create the IESD, a flagship innovation facility which will enable energy research and development.
The project included an extensive upgrade to the five-storey building’s roof.
Supplied in 2m wide rolls, 1,200m2 of 1.6mm Protan SE membrane was installed by sub-contractor Range Roofing using a combination of traditional mechanical fix systems in conjunction with the SFS intec isoweld 3000 system.
The main plan area of the roof was made of timber, meaning traditional mechanical fixing techniques could be used to secure the Protan SE membrane.
However, the other element was a concrete slab overlaid with infill material. Years of repairs also meant that the thickness varied across the roof, up to 500mm, and it had a variety of fall across its span and screed. isoweld was therefore specified to provide a method that delivered optimum adjustability.
Range Roofing’s Nick Haves also explained the benefit of Protan’s 2m wide rolls: “Protan’s ability to provide wider material was a big benefit too, giving us greater flexibility in our positioning of the fixings, not necessarily at close centres, yet still ensure the roof would perform. It also offers environmental benefits, which complimented the end-use of the building.”
The IESD is being funded through the Growth Deal awarded to Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership and is due for completion in Spring 2017.
